Midcentury Modern Beaumaris House

Originally functioning as a converted garage and home gym, this Beaumaris project was reimagined by Eclectic Creative as a warm and welcoming rumpus and secondary living space for a family home with strong ties to its midcentury modern origins. Located within one of Melbourne’s most iconic modernist suburbs, the design approach focused on creating a relaxed and highly functional retreat that felt connected to the home’s original 1960s architecture while supporting modern family living.

The brief called for a space that could feel both practical and inviting, balancing durability and comfort with a strong sense of personality and warmth. Drawing inspiration from the home’s existing architectural language, the interior palette incorporated rich timber tones, textured materials, earthy greens and layered furnishings that nod subtly to the relaxed modernist character of the era.

Custom joinery and built-in seating were carefully integrated throughout the space to maximise functionality while maintaining a calm and cohesive aesthetic. A bespoke window seat was designed to create a quiet reading nook overlooking the garden, while timber batten detailing introduced texture, warmth and architectural rhythm throughout the interior. Carefully considered storage solutions helped ensure the room could flex easily between family relaxation, entertaining and everyday living.

Furniture and styling selections played an important role in softening the space and creating a more layered, lived-in atmosphere. A custom sofa anchors the living zone, complemented by tactile textiles, sculptural lighting and vintage-inspired accents that reinforce the home’s midcentury modern influence without feeling overly themed or literal.

The result is a highly functional and character-filled family living space that feels deeply connected to the home’s architectural roots while introducing warmth, texture and flexibility for contemporary living.
