The Role of Floor Plans in Your Renovation: How We Work With Architects and Drafters

Why Accurate Floor Plans Are Essential.

When renovating, accurate floor plans are more than just drawings—they are the foundation for a successful project. Here’s why they matter:

Our Process for Clients Without Existing Floor Plans.

If you don’t have floor plans yet, don’t worry—here’s how we guide you:

Step 1: Confirm the Scope of Works
After our initial consultation, we determine whether your project requires dimensioned floor plans and an extensive site survey and measure-up. For multi-room renovations or projects involving wall changes (structural or not), extensions, or wet areas, these plans are a prerequisite before we can move forward and we require the dwg. file to work from.

Step 2: Engage a Registered Drafter or Architect
We work closely with a network of trusted professionals who specialise in both straightforward layouts and complex renovations. Depending on your project’s needs, we’ll recommend the right consultant for you. Once you accept their proposal, we schedule a kick-off meeting on-site to align on the project vision and next steps.

Step 3: Collaboration on the Proposed Layout
While the drafter or architect handles the technical drawings and framework plans for the concept, we provide input to ensure the framework layout for the entire home aligns with your lifestyle and design goals. This collaborative process allows us to advocate for flow, functionality, and aesthetic cohesion.

Step 4: Interior Design Begins
Once the proposed floor plan is finalised and approved by you, we step in to create tailored layouts and technical drawings for key areas within the home—like kitchens, bathrooms, and custom joinery. We provide options for the space planning when it comes to the individual areas such as where the bath and toilet will go, layout ideas for the kitchen layout and flow. From there, we develop the designs and document the finishes, furnishings, and finished styling, bringing your vision to life.

Architect or Drafter? How to Decide.

Many clients wonder whether they need an architect or a drafter for their renovation. The answer depends on your project’s complexity:

  • Architect: Ideal for larger renovations, extensions, or projects with structural challenges. Architects often bring a creative and technical perspective to complex designs.
  • Registered Drafter: Best for straightforward renovations or layout adjustments. Drafters are skilled at preparing technical drawings for council approvals and builder use.

Both suggested professionals can handle layout planning including existing and proposed framework plans, and we work seamlessly with either to ensure your interior design vision is reflected throughout the process.

Setting Clear Expectations.

To work with Eclectic Creative, dimensioned floor plans are a prerequisite for whole-hom or multi-space renovations. This ensures:

For smaller-scale projects (like standalone kitchens or bathrooms), we can handle the existing site measure and layout directly.
