Hawthorn East House Contemporary Classic Edwardian Renovation

Hawthorn East House

Contemporary Classic Edwardian Renovation in Melbourne Located in leafy Hawthorn East, this refined Edwardian home renovation honours the architectural significance of Melbourne’s early twentieth-century suburban expansion. Defined by generous proportions, decorative detailing and enduring craftsmanship, homes of this era require a careful and considered design approach. At Eclectic Creative, we specialise in heritage home renovations across Melbourne, balancing period integrity with modern functionality. This project reflects that philosophy through restraint, material intelligence and architectural sensitivity.

Set within one of Hawthorn East’s leafy, established streets, this Edwardian home renovation honours the suburb’s rich architectural fabric while introducing a refined, contemporary interior vision.

Hawthorn East is known for its elegant Edwardian and Federation streetscapes. Rather than compete with the home’s original character, our approach focused on preserving proportion, rhythm and spatial hierarchy, carefully recalibrating the interiors to support modern family living.

Original room volumes were retained, allowing the home’s inherent generosity to remain intact. Improvements to flow, cohesion and functionality were introduced through custom interior design and considered joinery solutions, ensuring the renovation feels seamless and intentional.

At the centre of the home sits a fully custom-designed kitchen that feels grounded yet distinctly current. Working within an unconventional existing footprint, the design intent revolved around creating a sculptural central island, conceived as a gathering place for everyday living.

The island was always intended to be the focal point. A place to meet, eat, entertain and connect. The stone selection therefore needed presence.

Rosa Quartzite, with its soft blush undertones, brings impact without overwhelming the space. Paired with blush-toned Japanese ceramic splashback tiles, porcelain benchtops, tailored 2pac shaker cabinetry and blackbutt timber veneer, the result is a contemporary classic kitchen that sits comfortably within its Edwardian context.

The island thickness was deliberately generous. A refined shadow line detail and subtle curvature soften the form, giving the joinery an effortless quality while maintaining architectural strength.

Every junction, proportion and storage solution was carefully resolved to ensure the kitchen enhances the home rather than competes with it. The outcome is a refined heritage kitchen renovation in Melbourne that feels enduring rather than trend-led.

Beyond the kitchen, the front formal parlour and main bedroom were thoughtfully refreshed with new wool carpets, relaxed Roman blinds, layered rugs and curated decor.

Iconic Herman Miller lighting integrates seamlessly within the Edwardian framework, highlighting the ornate plasterwork and decorative detailing rather than distracting from it.

The overall aesthetic leans contemporary classic. Calm. Confident. Material-led. Where some heritage interiors rely heavily on decoration, this project focuses on proportion, texture and craftsmanship.

In the open-plan living zone, a Melbourne-made custom modular sofa was designed to the precise millimetre, maximising comfortable seating for a family of four while maintaining clear circulation. A curved swivel armchair in soft blush linen introduces movement and softness. To subtly echo the kitchen palette, a blush-toned rug anchors the space, pairing beautifully with the rich timber of the Tide Design coffee table. The layering feels cohesive without being overt.

This Hawthorn East interior renovation demonstrates how heritage homes in Melbourne can be respectfully modernised through considered design, detailed documentation and a strong understanding of architectural context.
