Curating Furniture, Lighting, Rugs, Art and Object for this heritage cottage in Melbourne's leafy bayside enclave of Elwood has dramatically elevated the cosy feel for this family home.
Elwood House had undergone an interior renovation which left our clients feeling some of the material finishes felt too harsh and a little bold with red brick and black joinery. With careful planning of a furniture concept and curated art, rugs, decorative lighting and objects, the home now feels warm, layered and hits the Mediterranean vibe they were searching for. Interior Decoration and finished styling can be truly transformative to the aesthetic as well as the overall vibe and feeling of a home and we wholeheartedly enjoy confirming furniture placement, weaving soft and considered layers, styling shelves, adding greenery and importantly fun, collected objects that add personality and reflect the homeowners.
We believe that the art of curating furniture and finished touches is about more than just filling a space; it’s about creating an experience that unites the entire home and Elwood House demonstrates this philosophy with a lively and rich palette of deep rusty reds with inky and powdery blues, bringing a playful yet balanced energy to each room.
From the start, our vision was to let colour guide the home’s atmosphere and attempt to soften the existing materials of red brick with black joinery, that were rather bold and demanding too much attention. Using red and blue as our anchors, we selected pieces that spoke to each other across spaces, creating cohesion while allowing each room its own character. A mix of textures and silhouettes helped reinforce this colour story, creating a layered, collected home that feels both intentional yet fun and spontaneous. We also added decorative and architectural lighting that not only enhanced the ambience and set the mood, but added interest and detail. From the scuptural pendant and wall lights in the main bedroom to the woven pendant over the dining, the rustic and woven materials helped pull the entire scheme together.
In furniture curation, each selection is an opportunity to add personality. For Elwood, we sought out pieces that had both function and flair, from sculptural chairs to vibrant, textural accents such as woven pure wool rugs adding depth and softness, the glossy red brick side table, aged vintage leather of the butterfly chair in tan, velvety soft deep blue headboard with tactile linens in the main bedroom, Danish Muuto dining chairs and kitchen stools in black and a striking oversized rattan woven pendant from Denmark. This approach of thoughtful selection and layering ensured that every room feels connected to the last, making the home feel cohesive while celebrating its unique corners and spaces.
This project reflects our belief that great design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating spaces that resonate, connect, and inspire. The right curation and styling can transform a house into a home that feels both joyful and sophisticated. We adore Elwood House!
Jess at Eclectic Creative was so wonderful in helping us to choose furniture and soft furnishings for our newly renovated Elwood home about twelve months ago. She has since helped us style the home with the finishing touches and I was really amazed by what a difference this made! The finishing touches on the home felt like the easy and fun part that I could do myself, but Jess’ huge talent in this space made me see what an art form and skill it is. The house suddenly felt cosy, completed, cohesive and “lived in”. The small additions really do make a big difference! I can’t wait to continue working with Jess and her team through this process and would not hesitate to say to anyone working with Eclectic Creative for interior design and renovation projects, but do not miss this final step of ‘interior styling’! It’s hard to capture the difference it makes; I have learnt a lot along the way and it’s been a really fun process!
